New poster: THE SMUGGLER

After a long 2-week marathon working on completing my latest movie poster (TBA), I decided to take a day off and work on a fun little character portrait just for practise. I’ve always wanted to do a design based on my favourite swashbuckin’ starship captain, so now was the time. What started as a fun little illustration grew into my newest poster: THE SMUGGLER. This one is kind of inspired by posters and portraits from the old west

This was created using only 3 colours in hopes of someday doing a screenprint, but in all honesty I don’t know what the final destination of my Solo design will be given how massive the STAR WARS franchise is. Maybe I can do a limited run if I get some okay buzz and demand for this one. Not really sure, guess we’ll see.

“Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh… everything’s perfectly all right now. We’re fine. We’re all fine here now, thank you. How are you?”

EDIT: I played around with a couple of colour variants, added them above.

  1. David

Please Please make a print of this – it’s amazing!

  2. Joey Bergeron

    Simply Awesome!

  3. NICE JOB buddy! Looks good, love the title of it.

Just let me know and I can help you out in getting these screenprinted.

  4. That is one of my favourite quotes from Solo. Great poster James, love the three colour approach. Would be nice to see some other characters too! No Jar Jar please. ;)

  5. I would kill to have a massive print of this for my office. Please help me make this happen!

  6. Not bad. Not bad at all.

  7. LucasG

James, this is fantastic. Great work, as always. Definitely going to pick this one up from you.

  8. Nice work, love the details.

  9. This is elite. Please produce a print. Huge. Need for my office.

  10. “Junior! It is you!” – SC

  11. A+ buddy, love that quote too! One of my favorite Star Wars moments, that kind of character/personality in the first 3 movies is completely missing from the newer 3.

  12. Jamileh

    very cool

  13. Perfect timing. Just got the old set on Blu-Ray and have been watching them over and over again. Would definitely pick this up. Great work.

  14. It’s always refreshing when you put together something quickly, trying something new and getting a great looking end result. Love it, liking the vector approach.

  15. The orange one looks fucking excellent!

  16. Nice – the third one is my favorite.

  17. Oh man, really diggin’ the orange one!

  18. They’re all fantastic!

  19. Shawn

Not sure how it would work out, but a forest green version (with orange, white and black highlinghts) would compliment my Adidas ‘Scoundrels’ quite nicely…

  20. Do want. Love to have this in my living room.

  21. Very nice design! The “splatter” effect adds some subtle depth to the shading and keeps it from looking too flat. I’ve noticed it as a feature of many of your designs. Is that the Drew Struzan influence showing through?

By the way, I agree with @Paul Pants on the quote… that part has always made me laugh – one of the funniest moments of the original series (that exposes the lack of endearing character in the new trilogy). Spot on!

  22. Jamie

I really like the orange one. Really cool James!

  23. Linda Nisbett

Oh I know a little 7yr old boy that would love this. Can you get it in a poster? Please email. :)

  24. Hey man that poster is sick, the one of THE SCIENTIST is also amazing, what is the name of the technic you use on the posters? Im looking to work on a few characters my self but I wanted to play around with the technic if there is one of course =)
